The ceremony of the youngest daughter of Java's Jogja's Sultan Hamengkubuwono X was held last month in such an amazing ceremony and bash. The procession was covered by aYogya local television.
We can watched Gusti Bendoro's hairline drawn by a Dukun Manten, a shaman specialized in bridal styling. Hairline draw called cengkorongan Paes, a pattern to beautify the bride and groom with a particular style.

Dukun Manten trusted to style the bride and groom is Tienuk Rifki or Nyi Wedono Sembogo Pujo, a very renowned bride stylist. In an interview she said she has fasted for two weeks to prepare this event. Dukun Manten also the bride and groom usually fast before the ceremony in order to have peace of mind and cleanse the soul, a kind of prayer that to have good make up results, the ceremony is not disrupted, and the newlywed to have a successful life in the future. The purity of the dukun manten’s soul was expected to reflects on the bride’s aura .

The bridal style Paes Ageng Yogyakarta was formerly used only for the Sultan and his realtives. After the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX ordinary people are allowed to wear this bridal style as well as batik sheets.
This bridal style has a lot of philosophy and deep meaning. The bride should undergo a halup-halupan (hairline shave) and aromatic fumes for hair treatment (ratus). Cengkorongan is a pattern in the forehead in the hairline. Citak is the dot between eyebrows, panunggul is the pattern in the middle, pengapit and penitis for the side pattern.

Accessories worn called raja keputren, made of gold and diamonds. Cunduk menthul was a 5 pieces gold flowers attached above the bun, pethat was a mountain-shaped comb, kalung sungsun was a
three tiered necklace, binggel kana bangle, dragon shaped shoulder chelate,
centhung – little combs for the left and right of forehead, and the ring.

There’s a lot of offering prepared for the event. For the make up mat the offerings were klasa Bangka (pandan leaf mats), apa-apa leaves and letrek fabrics (red, green, yellow and black fabrics). Offerings in the bridal suite were crusted candlenut, keluwak, variety of nuts, corn, rice, letrek clothes, small mirror, face powder, perfume, chicken egg, coconut sugar, lawe yarn, jug of water, stool, betel leaves, boreh flower, bananas. All arranged in a nyiru biru container.

Dukun Manten also casts a mantra / prayer /sembaga to request so all prayers will be answered and so the bide will be as pretty as an angel.
The dance was originally danced by 10 men, without the accompaniment of musical instruments. The musics produced by the voice of two group leaders (syekh), clappinghands and pat chests. The lyrics are about islamic preach, ethics, epic etc. Syekh tasked also to give command of motion changes. This dance reportedly discovered and developed by Sheikh Saman, a scholar Gayo, although I think this dance seems older than that.
This dance now has spread throughout Aceh and Indonesia, performed by men and women. The dancers have to practice in earnest with full concentration because each dancer must be in sync with others.
This dance is performed by nine female dancers who depict love of the the southern sea queen Nyi Roro Kidul to either Sultan Agung or his grandfather, Senopati.

Dance performances conducted in pendhapa, an open hall with pillars in the front of Susuhunan which sat at the throne. The dance accompanied by a chorus of women and men (sindhenan lampah sekar). Musical accompaniment is not a complete gamelan orchestra but only few instruments: kethuk, kenong, gongs and kendang only.

Many taboos surrounding this dance. Rehearsals should only be done once every 35 days, in every rehearsal and performance offerings must be made. Dancers must perform fasting and ritual purification, their must wear bridal dress and their upper body lathered with mangir (yelowish lotion made by rice and temugiring).

This dance style depict subtle eroticism of Javanese, all the dancers looked down not looking to the audience. The simplicity of the music, gentle and slow movement of the dancers and the offerings creates eery goosebumpish beauty.
And this work of local genius is still preserved by traditional means: through all sorts of restrictions / taboos / pamali.

In Kampung Naga which is located between the highway Tasik and Garut, Western Jawa, Kecamatan Salawu Neglasari, engineers with no degree that lived hundreds of years ago had lived with nature and try to defend its wisdom with all means. In the lush and humid river valley, where water is abundant with high rainfall that is continuesly preserved, one particular way is through environmentally friendly architecture and various taboos.

It is said that the origins of the name of Kampung Naga from the term 'diNA GAwir village' or 'village on the cliff', which eventually became the village of Naga alone ..
Restricted forest. There are two forbidden forest, the first area residents are prohibited from entering the forest for any reason, and the second area forest that can be entered only when there is a ceremony and must be accompanied by a Kuncen (elder gatekeeper who also know the history of a distinguished place), for purposes of pilgrimage to the tomb of their ancestors. Violation of this prohibition is cursed or exile.

As a result of these prohibitions, the water source maintains its sustainability. The village has never experienced drought and landslides. Kampung Naga area also should not be traded fo any reason.
The use of tight zoning or the division of the area. Areas are made terraced with stone piles without cement, and proven to withstand erosion. Drainage channels are made between houses. Houses are all facing north-south and row -lined east to west. Roof are made of palm leaves and with base from a kind of laos leaves. The roof of these fibers will eventually overgrown with moss and became more leak-proof. The roof of a opposite houses form a natural gutter, while the side neighbour the rain gutters are made. High slope form roof ensure rain water does not splash back in reverse direction.
The rice grown here is somewhat different type, larger in size and planting time is longer about 6 months. Rice is harvested using tool called ani-ani and hammered with mortar and pestle until the skin loose. This processed conducted as necessary every week. Strands of dried rice tied up and stored in a warehouse. Dozens types of rice planted for ceremonial purposes.Mitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11733662099911895141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3437589475205938151.post-16010483271429584382011-06-13T08:00:00.001+07:002011-09-15T07:29:06.720+07:00The Temple of King BokoAbout 3 kilometers south of Prambanan temple situated the area of Boko Temple in Sleman, Yogyakarta. Based on the ancient writings made by the Rakai Panangkaran 746-784M, the temple first called the Abhayagiri Vihara which means monastery on the top of the Mount of Peace. Then its designation changed and its name and its function became Walaing Palace. This site is a mixture of Hindu and Buddhist influences. Boko itself is a stork in the Java language.
The use of iket become imperative because it is believed to protect them from evil spirits, in addition to practical functions such as containers / wrappers, blankets, pads to carry the load on the head etc..

Iket is made of batik cloth in rectangle shape that is folded in such a way as to be typical models. There are differences iket model for West Java and Central Java. In this article we try to make the Sundanese iket styles. Iket models are given names like barangbang semplak, parekos, or porteng (source from here )

Hopefully iket will be popular again among the javanese men. If on the island of Bali, we still see the use of iket everywhere, then Java should also be able to do the same. To popularize this iket you can start to use it everywhere, at the wedding, to the funeral, at mosques, or even when you hang out at mall. This distinctive look could be combined with a trendy western-style clothing, Gothic, or rock, even the use of this iket could be a characteristic that makes you look more individual and different.
Pictures of Javanese bride and groom. In the traditional wedding ala Mataram court there are several ceremony such as lamaran, pasang tarub, tuwuhan siraman, ijab kabul, panggih, resepsi, sepasaran and selapanan. Normaly it takes four to five hours to prepare the bride make up and clothes. The bride have a paes pinanganten or wedding forehead painting in their front hair line. We can see that the javanese is not realy a body conscious people.Mitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11733662099911895141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3437589475205938151.post-14260554341249668472009-02-19T18:53:00.007+07:002011-09-15T07:34:13.518+07:00Wayang kulit, the Javanese Shadow puppetpic from kkseema
The puppet made from cow, buffalo or goat's skin which processed, engraved and painted until done. The puppet then played for a wayang kulit show, usually Ramayana or Mahabharata stories. It needs at least 18 people to play a complete shaddow puppet show, one puppet master or dalang, 2 singers and 15 peoples to play music instruments, the gamelan. The show can be up to 8 hours. The stage contains white fabric as a screen with banana tree pole lay down below for sticking all the puppets. The traditional lamp is a brass coconut oil lamp (blencong), but nowadays a halogen lamp will do. The audience watch from behind the white fabrics, only watch the shadow of the ornamental puppet.
Batik refers to textile that dyed several times with a specific technique called batik. Although the process of decorating cloth through the process of batik is found in several regions in Africa or India and even in some South East Asian countries, the batik of Indonesia is unique and unequaled. Batik is generally thought of as the most quintessentially Indonesian textile. Indonesian Batik is made in several regions, but the center of the art is Central Java, in cities like Yogyakarta, Solo, Cirebon, Pekalongan and Indramayu.

Motifs of flowers, twinning plants, leaves buds, flowers, birds, butterflies, fish, insects and geometric forms are rich in symbolic association and variety; there are about three thousand recorded batik patterns. Batik motifs recall characters from the Hindu epics, plants, animals, sea creatures and gamelan melodies.
In the 19th century, the application of waxed patterns with a large copper stamp or stenciled saved the batik industry from competition with cheap printed European cloth. The semi-industrial nature of stenciled work allows it to be performed by men. Stenciled batik is much cheaper than hand made. Stenciled usually produced by men while hand made batik usually made by women. So based on the process there are 2 types of batik, hand written batik (batik tulis) and stenciled batik (batik cap).

The art of "batiking" is similar to the one of drawing or painting on a piece of cloth. The main tool - the canting (read:tjahn-thing)- is a small copper container with a long slender spout, is used instead of a pencil or brush, and liquid wax instead of paint.
pic from murnis

Finely detailed designs are first drawn freehand with a pencil on the textile. The wax is removed with hot water, scraped from the portions of the dried material still to be dyed. The parts that were covered by the wax did not absorb the dye and thus remain white (or whatever color the original cloth was previously dyied). Since the wax behave as a resisting medium, this process is called resist-dye process.
Next, other areas are waxed over. this is repeated during each phase of the coloring process, up to four or more times, until the overall pattern and effect are achieved.

pic from tjokrosuharto

A traditional recipe for batik wax is a mix of beeswax and paraffin, about 60:40. Beeswax is soft, pliable, and blocks completely: no cracking. Paraffin is more brittle, and lets dye penetrate wherever cracks form. Crackle is a characteristic batik effect, a scatter of thin dark wavy lines, a batik hallmark. Some dyers seek crackle, freezing and crumpling the cloth to make more. Others avoid, if they can, any effect that seems uncontrolled. For more crackle, more paraffin. Any clean, low-oil paraffin, melting from 130 - 150° F will work. Beeswax should be light yellow or tan and clear of debris. But most batik today is done with synthetic micro-crystalline waxes. They’re more consistent, more often reusable, penetrate better, can be heated (safely) to higher temperatures. They usually fall between beeswax and paraffin in price and in working properties. They can be blended with other waxes for intermediate effects.
Article source discover-indo
Klick here to know more about batik at Pekalongan batik museum.
This web have a complete story of Yogyakartan batik.

Today batik is not only applied in fabrics but also for wooden crafts like this mask below.
pic from baliartwares

Old picture of women wears batik and kebaya
pic from indonesiamedia

Modern batik inspired dress
pic from planetMitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11733662099911895141noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3437589475205938151.post-28901822825493129992008-09-19T23:12:00.002+07:002011-09-15T07:34:57.945+07:00Madura's Magic WandTongkat Madura is the secret of the Maduranese women to enhance sexual favors for both couples. This stick is made of herbs and ingredients from Madura island such as seashell powder, manjakani, rapet wood (Parameriae cortex), jati belanda leaves (Guazumae folia) and others. This secret has been spread throughout the world now but it is still surprising that Tongkat Ajimat Madura sold by mbok jamu is made in China!
How to use: insert a stick into the vagina, let stand for two minutes and remove. Wash the rod for subsequent usage. Benefits: for more dry vagina, fragrant and cures fluor albus. Tighter vagina (means dryer with a little mucus) is believed to be favored by men because it resembles virgin’s. After childbirth women wants to tighten their ‘loose vagina’. I have not found any article about the dangers of this treatment.Mitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11733662099911895141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3437589475205938151.post-23658088297744653262008-09-17T22:24:00.007+07:002008-09-18T00:00:53.469+07:00JAMU GENDONG<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkdinczsMzy-tV3xf4gk2Hn_lW9oNumuWXPROiqKeTDW7dwMmGIy6pImaOJdqZO-lNV7M6xbXCcep8LxnrvrXYch0K0ydZIYe-4I1UrBQ_3m6FAcuS9l-z__H4HQfzpUJJ_6klnbZboxYA/s400/P1020811.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247011679456757602" />the jamu lady in this picture still owe me 3 kgs of temugiring and go MIA

Jamu gendong means back carried jamu. Rice (Oryza sativa)is the main food for Javanese and most indonesians (drier eastern indonesia have sagu and sweet potatoes). Lots of rituals and traditions here actually made for rice worshipment, so it is called that we have a rice culture.
The term 'rice' if translated to bahasa indonesia have a pretty long list depends on its state. The rice plant is padi (paddy) and grown in the watered field (sawah). The grain is gabah, which is rice with palea/skin. After the skin peeled (in ancient time we hammered it with alu and lesung) it become beras (raw rice grain). After cooked/steamed we called it nasi.
The fragrance is strong, mysterious and seductive and Indonesians usually asociated the scents with female spirits/ghosts. It’s very popular in Indonesia as cut flowers or clustered for bride’s accessories and decoration, traditional rituals and ceremonies. Other type of tuberose flowers is edible and added to kimlo soup.
Tuberose oil is very expensive. This probably because the flower itself have a very good economic value as cut flowers, or maybe because the production process is not widely known. Unlike other essential oils, tuberose oil processed from extraction of fresh flowers, picked before the petals open and mixed with usually hexane solvent.
Tuberose oil is not normally used in aromatherapy but widely used in the perfume industry as a component of good quality perfumes and is said to have narcotic properties, although proper safety data is not available.Mitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11733662099911895141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3437589475205938151.post-46179319959607228432008-04-20T16:22:00.006+07:002008-04-20T16:36:34.164+07:00Fresh jamu drinks at Toko YouIf you want to try fresh jamu drinks while in Bandung, just go to Toko You, a cafe/diner situated at jalan Hasanuddin, Dago area, just near the Borromeus Hospital.
Beside its cozy ‘warung’ like ambience (warung is a traditional grocery stall) and their butter fried frogs, we can have fresh jamu drinks. The shape should be round and the surface suppose to be smooth, with or without pores. Pumice also suitable for this, but have a rougher quality. Lots of spas and salons offer the ‘vagina's ratus’ treatment. This treatment, again, came from Javanese tradition. Ratus is an incense nuggets/chunks made from 8 aromatic ingredients including kemenyan madu, sandalwood chunks, mesoyi, klembak roots, aren sugar, klabet, pucuk and ganti wood.

This incense nugget then sprinkled to charcoal burned in a small pottery stove called anglo. The aromatic fumes then applied to deodorize hair, batik sheets or...vagina. We can combed hair on top of the anglo and let the aromatic fumes deodorizes our hair, put the anglo beneath the laundry line for deodorizing batiks, or put the anglo under the hollow chair to deodorizing vagina. Ratus proved to protect batik sheets from mites and bugs, giving a unique scents and preserve the precious batik sheets on storage.
Mitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11733662099911895141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3437589475205938151.post-55726847682663335742007-12-28T23:59:00.000+07:002011-06-09T12:47:06.220+07:00massageMassage therapy has gained a lot of ground as a complement to conventional medicine. Research studies conducted in the past decade have shown that massage has medically beneficial effects – such as lowering blood pressure and increasing oxygen absorption – in addition to its ability to relax both the mind and tense muscle tissue.

Massage therapy is the manual manipulation of the body’s soft tissue to prevent or reduce pain and stress, and to promote health and well-being. The success of massage therapy has spawned many methods, systems and types (e.g., Swedish, shiatsu, trigger point therapies).

All massage therapy involves the manipulation of soft tissue – kneading, pressing or stroking – by a practitioner licensed from an accredited school. Associated with relieving stress and anxiety, massage has been used to supplement the treatment or management of soft-tissue injuries, physiological and emotional disorders, and pain.

People with pre-existing conditions or diseases should consult their physician before undergoing massage therapy.
